GHMC digs up roads in monsoon, irking public
An entire year and several seasons have passed, but drainage work is still to be completed and the roads still to be repaired.
Hyderabad: The untimely moves of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is testing the public’s patience. On one hand, the Himayatnagar roads are being dug up for the laying of pipelines and people are left inconvenienced in this monsoon season as these roads have become un-walkable with all the mud and water. On the other hand, the roads which were dug up in East Anandhbag, Malkajgiri, more than a year ago for underground drainage work are still in the same condition. An entire year and several seasons have passed, but drainage work is still to be completed and the roads still to be repaired.
Ms Sadhana Ramchander, a resident of Himayatnagar and whose apartment complex is just on the main road, said she regularly witnesses the complexities faced by the commuters. Ms Ramchander said, “There are lot of deep pits on the dug-up road, and there is no fencing to prevent any untoward incidents. Chances are that unsuspecting people might fall in the pits. It’s really risky to take the path.” Residents of Himayatnagar are questioning the GHMC's unseasonal moves. They want to know why the GHMC had not taken up the work during the summer season and what was the point of inconveniencing people to this extent.
When DC tried contacting the GHMC officials regarding this, they were unavailable for the comment.
The condition of the roads at BJR Nagar in East Anandbagh, Malkajgiri are worse with the residents saying that it has been more than a year since the roads were dug up for the pipeline work.
When questioned about the progress of the UGD works at the BJR Nagar road, Mr Akula Narsingi Rao, corporator, said that the UGD work got delayed because of the contractor, for which he had been blacklisted. “Tenders were floated again for the remaining work drainage work and soon the road will also be laid too”, he said.
Many other places in the city like Hayatnagar, Miyapur, Nagaaram, Rajendranagar and others are also facing the same road problems.
