New Rs 100 note to be bigger than old note
It will have the motif of Unesco heritage site Rani Ki Vav'.
Hyderabad: The new lavender-coloured Rs 100 note will be larger in dimension than the old blue-green note and slightly bigger than the new brown-coloured Rs 10 note.
It will carry an etching of the Rani Ki Vav (Queen’s stepwell), a UNESCO heritage site in Gujarat, on one side and the Father of the Nation on the reverse.
The new Rs 100 note is likely to be released in the market in August. The present currency will continue to be valid until the new note replaces it completely.
An official statement released by Jose J. Kattoor, Chief General Manager, RBI, said ‘Shortly the new currency note in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series, bearing the signature of Dr Urjit R. Patel, Governor, Reserve Bank of India, will be released. The base colour of the note is Lavender. The note has other designs, geometric patterns aligning with the overall colour scheme, both at the obverse and reverse. The dimension of the banknote will be 66 mm × 142 mm.’
The Reserve Bank of India clarified that all the bank notes in the denomination of 100 issued by it in the earlier series will continue to be legal tender. ‘As is normal, when a new design of banknote is introduced, printing and supply of these notes for distribution to the public through the banking channel will gradually increase,’ the press note said.
