Hyderabad: Hyderabad High Court on Thursday made two suggestions for ensuring reservation and to not sacrifice the merit list while making admissions into the Medical Colleges in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana state.

A division bench, comprising Justice V. Ramasubramanian and Justice N. Balayogi, was dealing with a batch of petitions opposing and supporting GO No. 550 issued by erstwhile Andhra Pradesh government in 2001 to fill up the seats vacated by reserved meritorious candidates.

Some of the petitioners contended that the GO was affecting 50 per cent merit seats.

The bench noted that two suggestions have emerged in the course of arguments as to how the problem could be resolved in the best way, while ensuring reservation and not sacrificing the merit.

The Bench said that the first suggestion is to permit the university to re-run the programme so that data could be obtained to see if the reservation crosses the bench mark of 50 per cent. The bench noted that the second suggestion is that the seats in most of the preferred colleges could be filled up on the basis of merit, without sliding. This will ensure that all merit list candidates are accommodated and the reserved candidates will not suffer.

It directed the standing counsel of the NTR and Kaloji Narayana Rao Health Universities in both the states to instruct them to re-run the programme and come up with the data on Friday.
