Private hospital in Vettuvakani ransacked after girl dies under treatment

Chennai: A private hospital in Vettuvakani near Neelankarai was ransacked and East Coast Road was blocked by relatives of a 17-year-old college girl, who died on Friday.She was under treatment for burns since Wednesday. Her relatives alleged medical negligence. According to police, the girl Nissam Begam, daughter of Dawood of Karpagavinayagar street, was admitted to the Trust Life Hospital on Wednesday after she suffered burns after hot water fell on her accidentally.

The medical team at the hospital reportedly gave her medicine and had covered her burns with dressing and bandage. When they were removing the dressing on Friday, the girl collapsed in pain and later died of possible cardiac arrest, police said quoting hospital doctors.

The family and relatives were shocked over the death of the girl and they had lodged a complaint of medical negligence with Neelankarai police station on Friday itself.

On Saturday, the situation turned ugly when the body was being brought to the house of the family from Royapettah GH after post-mortem. Relatives and friends of the girl's family became angry and ransacked the hospital. They later staged road roko on ECR demanding action against doctors. Only after the police promised action, the protestors stopped road roko and dispersed.
