Hyderabad: The Shia community has demanded that the government sanction Rs 5,000 to 50 ashoorkhanas in each district and 100 ashookhanas in Hydera-bad for maintenance, renovation and minor repairs ahead of Muharram. They complained that last year, the GHMC did not utilise the funds issued by the Wakf Board for the purpose.

Shia Companions, a voluntary organisation, in a memorandum said that the state had 11,806 ashoorkhanas notified under the Wakf Board.

Shia Companions general secretary Syed Ali Jafery said many ashoorkhanas were in a dilapidated condition. Last year the Wakf Board had transferred grant-in-aid for repairs to the GHMC. “When we inquired with the GHMC about the works they denied that the GHMC never received amount from Wakf Board.”
