Ayukta scam: Karnataka HC grants bail to Ashwin, others

SIT opposed the bail plea, arguing that the accused have misused the institution for extorting government officials.

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Monday granted bail to former Lokayukta Justice Y. Bhaskar Rao's son Ashwin Rao and others in the Lokayukta extortion scandal. The others include Syed Riyazathulla (Riyaz), Ashok Kumar, V. Bhaskar, H.S. Rajashekhar, V.B. Shankare Gowda, Narasimha Murthy and Narasimha Rao.

The advocate representing the SIT opposed the bail plea, arguing that the accused have misused the institution for extorting government officials. The advocates for the accused submitted that the accused were in judicial custody since July 2015 and the chargesheet too had been filed.

They prayed for bail, with the assurance that all of them would cooperate with the investigation. The court granted bail and directed them to deposit Rs 1 lakh with one surety each.

Former Lokayukta Y. Bhaskar Rao, has approached the high court, seeking to quash the case against him in the extortion scandal. On August 3, the SIT had submitted the chargesheet, naming Justice Rao as accused number.
