Hyderabad: Three buildings of the South Central Railways, Rail Nilayam, Lekha Bhavan and Zonal Railway Training Institute (ZRTI), were awarded by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for being energy-efficient units, at its 24th national awards for excellence in energy management.

The Rail Nilayam serves as the SCR headquarters and Lekha Bhavan houses the accounting division, both in Secunderabad, while the training institute is at Moula Ali.

SCR has been consistently receiving energy conservation awards at national and state levels for several years running. This, however, was the first time the ZRTI building secured the award.

SCR officials said energy conservation measures included using energy-efficient LED  lighting, energy-efficient inverters (star-rated) and precision AC units, HVAC control and temperature monitoring, switching off AC units during idle hours, energy savers, occupancy sensors, use of solar energy for water heating and electricity generation, timers for water coolers/rolling examination lights, optimisation of lifts, bifurcation of fan circuits at platforms to switch off 70 per cent of fans during non-travel period, use of energy-efficient pumps, use of star-labelled electrical equipment and provision of electronic fan regulators in place of conventional ones.
