8 killed as portion of TN transport corporation's building collapses
3 others sustained injuries after portion of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation's building collapsed in Nagapattinam.
Nagapattinam: A portion of an over six-decade-old building of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation's (TNSTC) Porayar branch in the district collapsed on Friday morning killing eight staff members, police said.
Three others sustained injuries, they added.
The staff members of the TNSTC were sleeping in the building, constructed in 1952, when the collapse happened around 3.30 am, killing them on the spot, they said.
The three others who sustained injuries were rushed to Karaikal General Hospital.
Nagapattinam District Collector Dr C Suresh Kumar visited the spot and conducted enquiries.
State Transport Minister MR Vijayabhaskar is also expected to visit the spot.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisamy announced compensation of Rs 7.5 lakh for next of kin of the deceased.
The Chief Minister also announced compensation of Rs 1.5 lakh for people with severe injuries and Rs 50,000 for people with mild injuries.
Palanisamy also announced government job for any one member of the families of the deceased in Nagapattinam building collapse.
