24 students in Erode canned for poor marks
All the 24 students were treated for their injuries at the PHC.
Erode: Corporal punishment took an ugly manifestation at a government-aided school at Koogalur near Gobichettipalayam in Erode district on Saturday as a mathematics teacher severely caned an entire group of tenth standard section students for scoring poor marks in a class exam.
The incident sparked an uproar among parents of the wards of ‘Gandhi Kalvi Nilayam’, a government-aided school, as 24 tenth class boys and girls were taken to the primary health centre at Koogalur for treatment of injuries they received as a result of the caning at the hands of their woman mathematics teacher.
Sources told DC that the teacher was angry with all the students in her class faring badly in an exam she had given earlier and severely caned them. All the 24 students were treated for their injuries at the PHC.
As the news of this incident spread, the parents of the wards with their relatives sought to lay siege to the school premises, demanding immediate action against the concerned teacher, as corporal punishment is banned in schools. They got into a heated argument with the school headmaster asking how the teacher could treat the students in such a crude way. The school authorities are investigating.
