TIRUPATI: Even as the Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT) is busy beautifying the city ahead of the National Science Congress meet in January, TD leaders are negating its efforts by putting up political banners across the city. The MCT, under the directions of commissioner V. Vinay Chand, initiated steps to clear traffic islands by removing banners and flags installed by various political parties.

However, the ruling TD erected banners at Anna Rao traffic island on KT Road. Large hoardings and banners were put up near the house of TDP MLA M. Suguna, where the entire traffic island is covered with banners of TD’s Janachaitanya Yatra. The Opposition parties allege that the ruling party is misuing it’s power even while the MCT is striving to make the city clean and green.

Many parks were given a facelift in the pilgrim city. The MCT officials are on the mission to beautify the city as the National Science Congress meet to be held in January will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other dignitaries from India and abroad. All the traffic islands in the city have statues of great personalities from different fields at the junctions.

The statues installed include those of political leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, B.R.  Ambedkar, Jagjivan Ram, Rajiv Gandhi, Jyothirao Phule, Anantasayanam Ayya-ngar, Neelam Sanjivareddy, N.T. Rama Rao, Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, spiritual personlaties like Annamacharya, Ramanujacharya, Tarigonda Vengamamba, Valmiki Maharshi and famous singers M.S. Subbulakshmi and Ghantasala.
