Debt-ridden farmer family attempts suicide

According to police, Bhagwan owned four-acre land in Akkannapet village in Husnabad mandal.

The farmer has been identified as Mahesh, aged around 30 years, and a resident of Kannuru near Kudur in Magadi taluk of Ramanagar district.

Hyderabad: A cotton farmer and his family members attempted suicide in Siddipet district after suffering crop failure in the face of mounting debts, police said.

Gunda Bhagwan Reddy, 50, his wife Rajavva, 45, son Premchandra Reddy, 25 and daughter Roja, 22 consumed pesticide on Monday night. Bhagwan and their children died, Rajavva is in a critical condition.  

According to police, Bhagwan owned four-acre land in Akkannapet village in Husnabad mandal. He and his wife tilled the land, while their children had done MBA and helped their parents. There was hardly any produce on their farm in the last few seasons. This season, a parasite infection damaged their entire farm yield. The family was also reeling from the burden of debts.  A case was registered by the Husnabad police.
