262 abkari cases in two months

Kozhikode: The Excise Department has registered 262 abkari cases and 44 Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) cases and 775 Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, or COTPA cases in the district in the last two months, a press release issued here on Wednes-day by department said.
In all 97 litre arrack, 9144 litre wash, 642. 590 litre Indian made liquor, 535.430 litre of liquor from other states, 7.520 kilogram of Ganja, one ganja plant, 8 gram brown sugar, 5 gram hashish, 520 addictive drugs in the form tablets, and 862.3 kilogram tobacco were seized in this period of two months.
The department had formed ‘people’s committees’ at the district, taluk and range levels to prevent brewing of illicit-liquor. Various awareness programmes including magic shows had also been conducted to create awareness on health problems caused by liquor consumption and substance abuse, the release said.
As many as 35 vehicles had been seized in various cases and a sum of '1, 71, 500 has been collected as penalty for these crimes. 22 medical shops, 30 labour camps and 74 trains were inspected in this regard. 19,713 vehicles were inspected as part of this drive by excise department. The excise officials said that, as many as 100 officers in the district underwent physical training, and received rifle training and few other officers participated in ‘special training.’
