Contractors told to fix streetlights by December 25
Those failing to do so will face action, said Mayor.
Bengaluru: After city Mayor Gangambike came across numerous complaints about street lights not functioning, during her city rounds, she has set a deadline of December 25 to set things right.
The Mayor has told the contractors and zone level officials to submit a report by December 25 or face action, including termination of contract.
During her daily rounds people told her about the non-functioning street lights and the apathy shown by BBMP in fixing them. They told her that despite lodging numerous complaints with the BBMP nothing was being done.
A BBMP official said, “We have been asking the contractors to carry out regular maintenance, but they are showing laxity. Now, the Mayor has given the deadline and they will have to ensure that every street light is working, failing which they will be penalised and their contract might be terminated too.”
The official also mentioned that they have been receiving letters from the jurisdictional police station to check on the street lights, as it would help in bringing down cases of chain snatching and robbery.
“The police personnel have also written a letter to us about the street lights not working and we have asked the officials of every zone to take up the maintenance of street lights on a priority,” the official added.
People claimed that the BBMP officials show laxity when they complain that the street lights in their area are not working and do not repair it immediately.
