Bhopal: A local court sentenced a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator to six months in jail in a cheque bounce case.
A special court set up here to dispose of various cases pending against MLAs and MPs on Thursday sentenced BJP MLA Surendra Singh Patwa to six months imprisonment, besides slapping a fine of `30 lakh on him over bouncing of cheques issued by him to an Indore-based couple in 2017. The couple had earlier moved the district court here alleging that the lawmaker had issued two cheques worth `12 lakh and `8 lakh to them towards repayment of the loans he has taken.
However, both the cheques had bounced, forcing the couple to issue a legal notice to him. He was later granted bail by the court.
A nationalised bank in 2018 had declared him wilful defaulter when a company promoted by his family failed to repay a debt of `36 crore.
