LSGD minister A.C. Moideen, along with Kochi mayor Soumini Jain and senior officials, inspects site of the waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram on Sunday

KOCHI: Local administration minister A.C. Moideen said on Sunday that the work on the waste-to-energy plant at Brhamapuram will begin once it got environmental clearance. The commissioning of the plant will bring a permanent solution to the waste problem, he said after inspecting the Brhamapuram waste dump yard.

The minister later held a meeting with Kochi mayor, district collector and senior officials who have accompanied him during the visit to the plant area. The minister said the government is trying to find a temporary solution to the waste problem as the government is quite serious about solving the issue. The work for collecting the effluent water seeping from the huge pile of waste using the motor is progressing very fast, he said.

The government promotes  decentralised waste treatment plants but cities like Kochi required centralised plants, he said.

Mr Moideen directed the mayor and the collector to ensure that the vehicles carrying waste to the plant are covered. He also wanted the local administration to ensure the dogs brought to the plant under the ABC project are not let lose within the plant premise. Mayor Soumini Jain conceded that waste processing was not taking place in a flawless manner. Collector Mohammad Y. Safirulla said steps will be hastened for the completion of the plant.
