Chennai: The Madras high court on Tuesday directed Namakkal district police to register a case against Srivilliputhur Sadagoba Ramanuja Jeeyar if cognisable offence is made out in the complaint filed by Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam (DVK) for making ‘soda bottle remark’. Justice M.S. Ramesh, before whom a petition filed by Vairavel, DVK Namakkal district organiser came up for hearing on Tuesday, has directed the Namakkal district police to register a case against Jeeyar if cognisable offence is made out in the complaint filed by Vairavel. In the petition, Vairavel sought direction to the police to register a case on a complaint made by him against the Jeeyar for his speech stating that ‘we (godmen) also know how to hurl soda bottles’.

On January 26, Jeeyar, while he was addressing a gathering of Hindus, demanded a public apology from lyricist Vairamuthu over the Aandal row. Jeeyar made the remark following an article published in a Tamil daily, penned by Vairamuthu, over Aandal. Vairavel said, “Jeeyar’s speech will instigate violence in the state”. He filed a complaint with the inspector, Thiruchengodu police station seeking appropriate action against Jeeyar. The petitioner said “sections 153, 294b, 506 (I) and 506 (II) would squarely apply to his speech. However, the police failed to act even after a complaint was filed on January 28.” Vairavel sought direction to the police to file an FIR against the Jeeyar for allegedly committing a criminal offence.
