Hassan: Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Hassan, Shobha Rani, is said to have escaped a bid on her life, made by illegal sand miners who allegedly tried to knock her down when the police officer intercepted them during a search operation in Alur police station limits in the early hours of Saturday.

It is said that the ASP, along with personnel from the District Armed Reserve (DAR) were at Kenchammana Hosakote in Alur and received clues about sand trucks passing on the route. Sources said the four sand-laden trucks were escorted by the sand mafia, who were in a car.

When the ASP tried to intercept the trucks, one of the escort vehicles carrying the mafia tried to knock the police officer down but she escaped by a whisker.

Later, the suspects escaped under the cover of darkness but the police managed to seize the sand laden trucks and arrested seven persons involved in the illegal activity. The search operation went on from 1 am to about 5 am, a police source told DC.

After private news channels flashed the news about the bid on the ASP’s life on Sunday, SP  Raman Gupta asserted that no such attack on Shobha Rani had taken place.

A case has been registered against the sand miners.  Efforts to contact Shobha Rani for her reaction to the alleged attack went in vain.
