Chennai: With common medical entrance exam made compulsory to all students this year, online registration for BE and B.Tech courses gained steam after Plus-2 results and crossed the two lakh mark on Thursday.

Compared to the applications received last year, this year around 50,000 more students have registered themselves for counselling. Over 20,000 students registered online in just two days after the declaration of results.

Last year 1.54 lakh students had applied for over two lakh seats. More than one lakh seats fell vacant. This was because more than 40,000 abstained from counselling.

“Though the increase in the applications is partly attributed to common medical entrance test, engineering courses still remains favourite among students,” professors of Anna University said.

Anna university on Friday announced that the last date for online registration is May 24. The last date for submission of filled in applications is May 27. “We should not go by the registration numbers. The number of students finally applying for counselling may be less,” Anna University officials cautioned.

“If we take the number of students who paid for counselling it is actually around 1.40 lakh. So we have to wait till May 27 to know the actual numbers,” they said.
This year online registration for engineering admissions started on April 15.
