BC voter count fuels GHMC poll talk
Speculation rife about advancement of GHMC polls, though its tenure ends in 2021.
Hyderabad: Speculation that the GHMC elections will be advanced has been fuelled by the decision of the civic body to commence ward-wise enumeration of BC voters and publication of the BC voters’ list in July second week.
The elections were held in February 2016 and the tenure of the GHMC elected body lasts till January 2021.
GHMC commissioner M. Dana Kishore on Thurs-day announced the schedule for the enumeration of BC voters in the city.
As per the schedule from June 22 to July 5, the officials will conduct house-wise survey to identify BC voters. The draft list of BC voters will be published on July 6 and objections will be received from July 7 to July 11. The final list will be published on July 18, ward wise, and forwarded to the government on July 19.
With this notification, the party leaders and cadres are expecting adva-ncing of elections to the the civic body.
In April this year, TRS president and Chief Mini-ster K. Chandrasekhar Rao was said to have sounded party leaders about advancing the GHMC polls.
In addition, the CM had reportedly indicated the advancing of the GHMC polls at the party’s state executive meeting which was held on Wednesday.
He reportedly asked the party leaders to prepare for the municipal polls which would be held in July in all likelihood.
Elections were held to the 68 municipalities and Nizamabad, Karimnagar, and Ramagundam Munic-ipal Corporation in July 2014. As per the schedule, the elections are due next month. Besides, the government has created another 68 municipalities by passing an Act in the legislature in March 2018.
On June 18, the state Cabinet decided to bring in a new Municipal Act to provide better and corruption-free administration to the people.
Sources in the party revealed that Mr Rao was planning to conduct elections in the old and newly constituted municipalities and also Nizamabad, Karimnagar, and Ramagundam corporations in July and simultaneously also conduct elections to the GHMC.
