New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the International Day of Yoga celebrations at the UN Headquarters in New York, emphasising that Yoga is a "truly universal" and "ancient living and dynamic Indian tradition." He described yoga as promoting physical fitness, mental calmness, and emotional contentment, while fostering health, harmony, and kindness for all. The event commemorated the location that supported India's proposal for an International Day of Yoga in 2014.

Prominent people who attended the event include the president of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Csaba Korosi, Hollywood actor Richard Gere, New York Mayor Eric Adams, and Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Amina J. Mohammed.

Modi addressed the practitioners, stating that yoga originates from India as an ancient tradition free from copyright or royalty. He highlighted its adaptability to different ages, genders, and fitness levels, making it truly universal. Modi recalled proposing the International Day of Yoga in the same venue nearly a decade ago, expressing joy at the worldwide support received.

The celebration began with Modi paying respects to the bust of Mahatma Gandhi installed on the UN headquarters' North Lawn. Participants, wearing custom-made white yoga attire, gathered on yellow yoga mats placed on the ground. The venue featured LED screens displaying Indian culture and heritage videos. Hollywood actor Richard Gere praised the inclusive and welcoming atmosphere, while Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US ambassador to the UN, expressed excitement for the event.

Reports indicated that representatives from over 180 countries, including diplomats, artists, academicians, and entrepreneurs, participated in the Modi-led Yoga Day celebrations.

Modi also delivered a video message addressing the International Day of Yoga celebrations in India. He stressed the significance of physical strength and mental expansion for a developed India. The Prime Minister highlighted the historic gathering of over 180 countries and how yoga unites and empowers societies. He emphasised India's cultural values, spirituality, and philosophy, which foster unity and selfless action.

Modi concluded by mentioning the connection between India's research bases in the Arctic and Antarctica through yoga. He noted the transformative mindset in India and urged presenting the spirit of 'Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat' (One India, Great India) as an example to the world.
