Tamil Nadu: Child worker gets Rs 1.60 lakh after losing finger

The minor girl received a cheque for Rs 1.60 lakh as compensation along with her pending salary of Rs 7,000 on Thursday.

TIRUPUR: A girl child worker of a textile mill, who lost her finger at industrial accident recently near Tirupur, received Rs 1.6 lakh compensation from the private mill, in deference to the demand made by the trade unions. 

The 14-year-old girl, Maheswari, hailing from Villupuram district was working at a private spinning in Chengapalli area near Tirupur. A week ago, her index finger was caught inside a machine and got crushed. She was admitted to a private hospital in Gobichettipalayam, where the damaged finger was removed.

Meanwhile, functionaries of various trade unions led by Tirupur district committee of CITU met the girl. The team submitted a memorandum to the district collector, demanding legal action. Following talks with the spinning mill's management by the trade union representative, the company accepted to provide compensation, said sources here on Thursday.
