Hyderabad: Lawyers give free legal aid at Shahi Masjid

Hyderabad: To resolve mutual disputes amicably and guide the general public in legal matters, the Shahi Masjid at Public Garden has undertaken a unique initiative to provide second opinion in legal matters.

Every Saturday, eminent lawyers provide guidance in legal cases of both civil and criminal nature within the mosque premises.

Imam and khateeb Moulana Dr Ahsan bin Mohammed al-Hamoomi said, “Musallis (those who pray in the mosque) have decided to provide legal aid to the general public. They observed that people have been approaching courts for petty issues that can be resolved through conciliation and arbitration. In many cases, bad advice and choice of counsel lead people to get entangled in lengthy cases.”

He said the public response had been positive with many people approaching them for dispute resolution. Most cases are related to conjugal disputes and heirdom of wealth inherited from elders.

Mr Mohammed Vasiuddin Faruqui and Mr Mohammed Ajmal Ahmed have taken up the responsibility to serve the people in this regard.

“We have been trying to convince the parties to resolve their disputes through arbitration to diminish enmity and the likelihood of retaliation. The initiative will help reduce the burden on courts. We have been providing legal opinions. So far, we have received 24 cases. Most parties have expressed their desire to withdraw pending court cases,” Moulana Ahsan said.
