Sheila Dixit cremated with state honours in Delhi

Before reaching the cremation ground, she was also taken to her DPCC office for the last time.

New Delhi: Former Delhi CM Sheila Dixit's last rites were performed at Nigam Bodh Ghat in Delhi on Sunday afternoon.

She passed away on Saturday afternoon in New Delhi of cardiac arrest.

Her mortal remains were taken to Nigam Bodh Ghat for her final rites amidst hundreds of people.

Before reaching the cremation ground, she was also taken to Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee's (DPCC) office for the last time. DPCC was key to Dixit's career when it began in 1998.

Earlier in the day, her body was taken from her Nizamuddin residence to Congress headquarters with chants of 'Sheila Dixit Amar Rahe'.

Political leaders paid their last respects to her at the AICC HQ.

Dixit's son and former MP Sandeep Dixit had said that she would be cremated in a compressed natural gas (CNG) machine instead of traditional pyre wood as she had wished, news agency ANI reported.

Delhi government has announced a state funeral and a two-day period of mourning for the former Delhi CM. Dixit served as the chief minister of Delhi for 3 terms and is known to change the face of Delhi.
