Four more bodies retrieved from Kuthiathode church

The bodies of Panackal James (78) and Shauriyar (45) were recovered on early Sunday.

Kochi: Four more bodies were retrieved by rescue personnel on Monday from near the St Xavier’s Church in Kuthiathode near North Paravur where a portion of the relief camp building wall collapsed reportedly trapping six persons under it. The bodies were identified as Kochouseph (85), Jomon (42), Paulose (85) and Xavier (85).

The bodies of Panackal James (78) and Shauriyar (45) were recovered on early Sunday.

The mishap happened on Thursday night when the portion of the church building got loose in flood water and collapsed, trapping the six under it.

The Periyar and the Chalakudy rivers merge at Kuthiathode. Because of the strong currents, the rescue personnel could not reach there till Sunday morning.

One person was seriously injured in the mishap and was shifted to hospital in rescue boat. Nearly thousand people were camping at the church building with flood waters submerging the area, among the worst affected in the flood.

Even now hundreds are being trapped in multistorey building with the rescue personnel yet to reach the interior places due to strong currents.

Meanwhile people complained that there were shortage of medicines and drinking water and urged the rescue teams to supply the same.
