Kochi: Expats' groups, NGOs, various other organisations and volunteers have launched relief exercise to support the flood-devastated Kerala. Groups have been formed in cities like Chennai, Bengaluru and Mumbai to collect and transport relief materials to different areas in Kerala.

Truckloads of materials required for relief camps and flood-hit families are being sent from various parts of the country and state. An expats' group has sent 18 tonnes of relief materials to Puthanvelikara and nearby areas, one of the worst-hit areas in Ernakulam district.

Singer Sayanora Philip coordinated the collection drive in Kannur while her sister and family friends collected materials from Bengaluru.

'Kai Korthu Kannur' has conducted a three-day collection drive through which more than 15 truckloads of materials were transported to various parts of the state.

"A group has been formed named 'Kai Korthu Kannur' to collect and transport relief materials to affected areas. Several truck loads of materials were sent to Thrissur, Ponnani, Irinjalakuda, Puthanvelikara, Alappuzha and Chengannoor. Materials were also sent to the district administration's collection centre at Pathadipalam in Ernakulam," said Sayanora. Several expats' groups also supported the 'Kai Korthu Kannur' initiative.  "We initially planned to conduct the drive for a single day. But considering the encouraging response from people and the increasing number of calls from affected areas, we extended the drive to three days," she added.

While monetary contributions are being sent to the chief minister's distress relief fund, several NGOs based in Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore and Bengaluru have sent essential materials including rice sacks, sugar, pulses, milk powder, baby food and other non perishable food items to various flood-affected areas.

An NGO based in Bengaluru named Kerala Samajam Charitable Trust sent medicines and non-edible things like mats, brooms, mugs, buckets and cleaning materials to camps in Paravur taluk.
