Vijayawada: Increased traffic is creating problems for the citizens of Vijayawada. Journey on NH- 16 in the city, from Ramavarappadu to Benz Circle, is taking around an hour in peak hours. Citizens are wary of heading towards Benz Circle considering the jam-packed roads in peak hours. The huge growth in the population of the city, after the announcement of state capital is directly responsible for the traffic woes in the city. A normal journey in the city, which took minutes earlier, is now taking hours and all major roads witness traffic jams from early morning to late night.
The National Highway traffic that passes through the city is creating problems and the 5-km stretch from Ramavarappadu to Benz Circle on the Ring Road is taking an hour. Crossing Gurunanak Colony signal takes at least 20 minutes and motorists have long been demanding officials to take necessary measures.
“Crossing traffic signal at Gurunanak Nagar is a big task for me. Traffic from five routes, including Patamata, Gunadala, Benz Circle is getting jammed at this centre. The National Highway traffic is the major reason for congestion there. Officials should first focus on developing an alternative route and divert the NH traffic,” says K. Naveen Chandra, private employee.
With the Dasara festival on the horizons, citizens are getting increasingly worried. “City roads are becoming congested with increasing city traffic. Traffic diversions for special events like political rallies and success tours add to our problems. Traffic diversions for Dasara festival is again creating worries. Police should consider our woes and concentrate on controlling the traffic flow,” says M. Rashmita, a resident of Gollapudi.
“We have diverted the NH traffic and taken measures to divert heavy vehicles and ensure the NH-16 traffic does not enter the city,” says Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Kranti Rana Tata.
