Hyderabad: The TRS on Thursday accused the Congress of trying to stall the early Assembly polls under the pretext of discrepancies in the voters’ list.

Addressing a press conference here, caretaker minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav, TRS MP B. Vinod Kumar and other party leaders said the Congress leaders were scared of facing early elections as they were sure of their defeat.

Mr Yadav said, “On one hand, TPCC chief Uttam says the Congress is ready for polls. But another Congress leader Marri Shashidhar Reddy files a case in the Supreme Court to halt the election on the grounds of discrepancies in the voters’ lists.

The issue of the voters’ list comes under the purview of the EC.

The EC has enough machinery and resources to rectify errors, if any. Why should the Congress bother about it? Moreover, there is time till September 25 to enrol for voting right. Instead of approaching courts, the Congress leaders should make efforts and appeal to the people to enrol for the voting right. People can check whether their names are there in the voters’ lists in all constituencies till September 25 and submit fresh applications on the spot, if they are not. Where is the need to file cases in courts? This shows the Congress fears facing polls and wants to stall the elections under this pretext.”

MP Vinod Kumar said the Congress leaders were now playing out a new drama to delay elections and were approaching the courts on flimsy and false grounds. “The Election Commission has started a massive enrolment drive for voters. Why is the Congress not utilising it and instead crying hoarse over deletion of voters' names,” he asked.
