Hyderabad: Irregularly hanging electric wires are posing a threat to residents of Malkajgiri. Residents complained that frequent sparks from the wires and short circuits in their homes had become a common phenomenon. A month ago, a major fire was averted with the timely intervention of the fire department, after a kitchen had developed a short circuit. Since there was no one at home, there were no casualties reported.
Naveen Joseph from Hanumanpet said that fluctuating power supply had become a regular feature in their colony and the dangling electric wires were posing a threat to the residents, and kept emitting sparks. Residents were apprehensive about their homes when they were out of town.
P. Prabhavathi, a retired State Bank of India employee, whose kitchen had been affected by the short circuit said, “On that day we were in Delhi and suddenly got a call from neighbours mentioning that heavy smoke was emitting from our kitchen and they had alerted the fire department. Our rice cooker, mixer grinder and switch board had completely burnt down, there were cylinders also, but they were at a different place and so the house was saved.”
Hanging wires is a common phenomenon in many areas of the city. Although the electricity department is working on trimming trees in many areas, the dangling wires have not been attended to by any civic body.
