Hyderabad: A gang of four engineering students, all aged 19, drove their speeding car right into Hussainsagar Lake on late Monday night, breaking the footpath grills on their dive in.

Saifabad police said that the students  escaped with injuries.

According to police, the four friends were identified as Manikanta, Ramaniah Shetty, Vatsal Amuda and Pavan Kumar.

“The boys were on a joyride after attending a birthday function at Dilsukhnagar when the mishap occurred. They were driving in high speed and were allegedly trying to make a U-turn near Lumbini Park, causing them to break the barricades and slide right into the lake.

“Fortunately, the place they landed in had less water and they were able to climb their way out,” said the police inspector of Saifabad Saidi Reddy, adding that the police had served notices to the students.

A dial 100 call made the police arrive at the scene and the car was then fished out with a crane. The boys were not under the influence of alcohol and the speed of the car was what caused the vehicle to skid. The car had airbags but it remained latched in, added the police official.

A case was booked under section 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC and an investigation was underway.
