New Delhi: Union minister of state for home affairs G. Kishan Reddy on Wednesday said 5,161 people have been placed under preventive custody in Kash-mir Valley since August 4, the day before Jammu and Kash-mir’s special status under Article 370 was revoked.
In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, the minister said, the preventive arrests were made to prevent commission of offences involving breach of peace and activities prejudicial to the security of the state and maintenance of the public order. Of these, 609 persons, including 218 stone pelters, are presently under detention.
Suggesting that the situation is normal in Kashmir, he said all schools and colleges are now open, all hospitals are also “fully” operational and there are curbs on the mov-ement of students.
