Most shops remained closed; banks shut.

Kannur: The dawn to dusk hartal called by BJP in Mattannur town on Wednesday went uneventful, as most of the shops remained closed. The banks were forcefully shut by the hartal supporters, said the locals. There was massive police deployment, and IG Mahipal Yadav and SP G. Siva Vikram visited the area after repeated attacks on BJP-RSS workers. Soon after the attack on an RSS Mandal karyavahak in Pullyod, five BJP leaders were attacked in Maloor on Tuesday night. All of them were returning after handing over a complaint to Peravoor SI over a recent bomb attack in their area.

Of the injured, Karshaka Morcha Mattannur mandalam president P. Gangadharan is critical and admitted to a private hospital in Kozhikode.  Others injured are BJP Mattannur mandalam president P. Rajan, BJP Mattannur municipality vice-president Sunil K, Mangattidam panchayat president Aneesh and BJP Maloor panchayath president Mohanan. All the four are recovering at Indira Gandhi Cooperative Hospital, Thalassery. Peravoor police registered a case against ten identifiable people. However, CPM Koothuparamba area committee denied any involvement in the violence.
