Oz aerobin installed in Peroorkada school
The bin can be fed from the top and the compost can be extracted from the bottom.
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An aerobin made in Australia was installed at the Peroorkada Girl Higher Secondary School here on Monday. The aerobin was unveiled by Shashi Tharoor MP at a function held in school campus. He explained the functioning and advantages of the aerobin to the students and staff of the school.
The aerobin has an advantage over existing composting devices in Thiruvananthapuram as the bin can be fed from the top and the compost can be extracted from the bottom. A single bin is sufficient for an establishment with reduced maintenance associated with other models. The compost generated is the most suitable fertilizer for organic farming.
The new model is claimed to be better than all the existing decentralised waste management methods adopted by the City Corporation. The aerobin comes in three sizes and individual unit cost around Rs 10,000.
“Food waste generated in school is being taken care of by bio gas plant in our institution. But we were forced to burn leaves and paper waste. Now with the new aerobin we will be able to solve this problem,” said Principal Biju L P.
She said the aerobin would be managed by a teacher and a group of NSS volunteers. The school was chosen for installing the aerobin because of its track record in running the bio gas plant.
Composting bins are useful in schools as they
take in a variety of mat-erials typically found in schools like paper cardboard, kitchen scraps, leaves , books wood chippings. Besides, it produces rich compost and leachate liquid which can be used for fertilizers for the students vegetable gardening projects.
