KANNUR: The state government aims to revive the past glory of handlooms in the State, said Industry Minister E.P. Jayarajan. He was speaking after inaugurating a workshop on the topic 'Developing employment opportunity in the textile and cloth manufacturing units', organised by the state Planning Board and public sector Restructuring and Internal Audit Board (RIAB) at Kannur on Monday.

There was a time when numerous handloom manufacturing units functioned in every village of Kerala. By implementing several developmental projects in the sector, we aim to bring back those golden days of the handloom sector in Kerala, he said.

After the state government initiated the school uniform project, more employment opportunities in the handloom sector were generated. Similarly, the government will open up chances and opportunity for the handloom workers. By the next academic year, all the government, aided and unaided schools in the state would be requested to switch over  to handloom sector for uniform clothes.

The government also aims at entering the international market of textile and clothes by introducing handlooms. Not just the handlooms, but all the traditional products of Kerala will be introduced to the international market, he further added.
