Bengaluru: In a surprise move, JD (S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda on Tuesday supported the candidature of former deputy prime minister L K Advani for the post of President of India.

Mr Gowda told the media here that Mr Advani was the most eligible candidate for President’s post. “I wanted to invite him to inaugurate the party office of JD (S) on Thursday, but did not want him to get into any kind of controversies. Therefore, I decided against inviting him,” Mr Gowda added. The former PM  had originally decided to invite all leaders who participated in Jayaprakash Narayan's ‘Sampoorn Kranthi’ movement during the days of Emergency.

Meanwhile, office bearers of state unit of JD (S) would formally enter the party office on Thursday though it was inaugurated last week. Mr Gowda said the party would organise a massive rally in Palace Grounds on that day ahead of office-bearers occupying the new building.
