Chennai: Two cops try to commit suicide near DGP office
The policemen, Raghu and Ganesan, were attached to the Armed Reserve (AP) and were serving in Theni district.
Chennai: Tension prevailed outside the office of Director General of Police (DGP) on Kamarajar Salai on Wednesday evening after two policemen attempted suicide by immolation alleging harassment by senior officers.
The policemen, Raghu and Ganesan, were attached to the Armed Reserve (AP) and were serving in Theni district. On Wednesday, the two had come to the DGP to file a grievance petition after which they attempted suicide by immolation.
Police sources said that they doused themselves with kerosene when other cops on security duty at the DGP’s office rushed and thwarted their suicide attempt. Later, speaking to mediapersons gathered there, the policemen levelled allegations against AR inspector Srinivasan claiming that he turned up drunk at work and hurled abuses against all personnel.
They claimed that they are being unfairly transferred out to another district for no fault of theirs. The duo was then taken to senior officers for counselling. Meanwhile, reacting to the incident, Theni Superintendent of Police, Baskaran said action was initiated against the two cops as there were complaints of indiscipline.
Woman constable attempts suicide
In a similar incident, a 45-year-old woman constable Sabeera of Kancheepuram district police attempted suicide on Tuesday night by consuming mosquito repellant. Police sources said that, marital dispute with her policeman husband Ravi is the reason behind her attempt. The woman constable was attached to the Maduranthagam Prohibition and enforcement wing. She is out of danger and is undergoing treatment at a hospital.
