Vijayawada: TD president and AP Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has sent signals that elections could be held early, during the TD coordination committee meeting held on Friday.

He called on party cadres to be ready for elections. “The general election may take place in the last quarter of 2018,” Mr Naidu said, and added that TD’s vote share had increased 16.13 per cent compared to the last elections.

The YSRC vote had fallen to 13.45 per cent and the Congress was confined to one per cent, Mr Naidu said. He said he was happy that the vote percentage has increased in Muslim-dominated areas compared to 2014.

He said that he would dedicate more time to party affairs from now on.

The party district committees have been told to convene public meetings every month to sensitise and prepare the cadres for the elections. Mr Naidu called for adding more Scheduled Caste and Tribe voters to the TD. He said he would be available in the party office from 6 pm to streamline the party’s activities.

He took a stern view of dissidence in the party and directed senior leaders to prepare a list of possible “outgoing and outdated” leaders. “We have to encourage young blood, with more commitment and integrity,” he declared. The coordination committee discussed the venue of the Mahanadu; a majority of the members want it in Amaravati rather than in Visakhpatnam or Tirupati.
