Chennai: Aid to mishap victim who lost his legs hiked to Rs 45 lakh

Chennai: The Madras high court has enhanced the compensation amount of  Rs 20.93 lakh awarded by a tribunal to an accident victim, who lost both his legs and is dependent upon others  even for attending call of nature, to Rs 45 lakh.

A division bench comprising Justices N. Kirubakaran and R. Pongiappan enhanced the compensation while disposing of an appeal filed by the New India Assurance Company limited, challenging the order of the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal, Chennai dated August 7, 2012.

R. Nagaraj, aged 32 years, a cleaner-cum-load man in a mini lorry met with an accident on way to Bangalore on December 6, 2009, and lost both his legs.
Enhancing the compensation, when the bench asked Nagaraj, who was brought in a wheel chair, to utilise the amount in appropriate manner, Nagaraj replied that he will spend the same for the marriage of his two daughters.
