Have flower show in every district: Governor

He presented prizes to the winners in various competitions held during the show.

Ooty/Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Governor Sri Banwarilal Purohit suggested that flower shows be held in every district in Tamil Nadu to bring to the fore, the best of farming talent in the state.

He was speaking at the valedictory of the 123rd annual flower show at the Government Botanical Garden here on Tuesday evening, which witnessed a record turnout of 1.60 lakh visitors over the past five days. He presented prizes to the winners in various competitions held during the show.

Sri Purohit said, all over the world many types of flower shows are conducted, where exotic and indigenous flowers are obtained from several sources and displayed. The famous flower shows of the world such as the Chelsea Flower Show of England and the Portland Rose Festival of Oregon are some of them.

However, what makes the Ooty flower show unique is the high level of local public participation that is encouraged in the preparation of the flowering plants and their display, he said.

He said it would be in the fitness of things if flower shows and competitions are held in every district of Tamil Nadu and prize winners felicitated at the Ooty flower show every year. This will help to bring forth the best of farming talent in every part of the state.

Senior IAS officer Gagandeep Singh Bedi, principal secretary and Agricultural Production commissioner, Dr N. Subbaiyan, director of Horticulture and Plantation Crops and Ms J. Innocent Divya, Nilgiris collector also spoke on the occasion.
