Chennai: Madras High Court has ordered notice to the Medical Council of India (MCI) and Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (Jipmer), Puducherry, on a petition seeking direction to the premier institute not to allot seats reserved for ‘Puducherry Scheduled Community’ (P-SC) to non-Puducherry Scheduled Community students.

When a petition filed by a medical course aspirant, A. Sarandev, who was denied seat in the institution, came up for hearing before Justice K. Kalayanasundaram, the judge directed MCI and Jipmer to file their reply by June 26.

Sarandev said Jipmer has six reserved seats in MBBS course under P-SC category for the candidates belonging to scheduled caste students in Puducherry. However, the institute recently released its merit list for P-SC category and he secured 10th rank in the list. Six candidates, who secured 1, 2, 4, 6, 7 and 8th ranks, do not hail from Puducherry.

His counsel Srinivasan said Supreme Court in two verdict held that migrants are not entitled to the benefits of reservation in the migrated State or Union Territory. He sought direction to the institution to admit him in the MBBS course.
