Prakasam: Police seize 15th century gold coins

Police led by SI P. Mukkanti rushed to the spot along with Peddaraveedu Tahsildar Dileep and seized the coins.

Nellore: Police have seized 30 gold coins made in the 15th century from a farmhand and a landlord at Sanikavaram village in Peddaraveedu mandal of Prakasam district on Saturday. According to Markapuram RDO Penchal Kishore, the farm worker Pondugula Narayana Reddy had stumbled upon a small box containing the gold coins while digging the ground for laying pipeline in the farm of Moddula Satyanarayana Reddy.

The coins had the images of Lord Venkateshwara, Sridevi and Bhudevi as well Lord Sri Rama, Sita and Lakshmana. Satyanarayana Reddy gave 10 coins to Narayana Reddy for keeping quiet and he kept the remaining  but a heated argument ensued between the two over sharing the coins and some locals alerted the police after coming to know about the brawl for gold.

Police led by SI P. Mukkanti rushed to the spot along with Peddaraveedu Tahsildar Dileep and seized the coins.  After examining, Archaeology department official Srinivas said the coins date back to Vijaanagara kings period in 15th century and they were made by a third generation king from the family, Venkatapathy Rajulu.
