Coimbatore: Free surgeries planned on National Bone and Joint Day
The bone and joint surgeries will be performed on deserving patients who cannot afford the same.
Coimbatore: Members of the Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA) will perform free bone and joint surgeries on deserving patients in the first week of August as part of National Bone and Joint Day. “It may be recalled that in 2016, the Indian Orthopaedic Association created a world record by performing the maximum number of free surgeries by any single country. “This year, we hope to create a new record of the maximum number of free surgeries performed by a country,” a source from the Coimbatore chapter of the IOA said.
The bone and joint surgeries will be performed on deserving patients who cannot afford the same. The process of identifying beneficiaries will begin at the various orthopaedic hospitals in the textile city on Monday. Orthopaedic doctors across the country are encouraged to perform at least one free surgery as part of the initiative.
National Bone and Joint Day is observed on August 4, and is an initiative started in 2012 by Dr S Rajasekaran of Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore, who was the then president of the IOA. To commemorate National Bone and Joint Day, every year during the first week of August, activities are planned to spread awareness about bone and joint diseases, the source added.
