Hyderabad High Court admits need to save Musi River
The bench said that the machinery which meant to protect the Musi river appeared to be failing in the discharge of its duties.
HYDERABAD: Expressing dismay at the apathy of the authorities in allowing the degradation of the Musi river by construction of fences and pathways on the river bed, the Hyderabad High Court on Tuesday felt that there was dire need to restore the lost glory of the river. A division bench comprising Chief Justice Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan and Justice V. Ramasubramanian was dealing with the PIL by G.R. Karunakar, a BJP leader seeking to direct the authorities to maintain the River Musi against any illegal construction.
The bench said that the machinery which meant to protect the Musi river appeared to be failing in the discharge of its duties. Expressing displeasure at the authorities in allowing the discharge of sewage and other effluents into the river, the bench said, “If the artilleries of the heart are filled with cholesterol, a bypass surgery is the only remedy to cure the patient.” Citing the recent disaster in Kerala, the bench felt that the aim of setting up proper disaster management was not to act after the disaster but to look into preventive measures.
