Kochi: SFI sweeps Maharaja’s, ahead in MG union polls

The KSU claimed to have won in 11 colleges in Ernakulam district.

Kochi: The Students' Federation of India (SFI) has swept the students union elections in the colleges affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi (MG) University. It won all seats in Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam.

Main opposition Kerala Students Union (KSU), too, claimed to have put up a strong show in the polls, winning back Aluva U C College, Kalady Sree Sankara College and Kothamangalam M A College after several years.

Out of the 41 colleges where elections were held on Wednesday for the academic year 2019-20, SFI claimed to have won the Union leadership in 37 colleges.

One of the most keenly awaited poll results was from Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, where SFI had fielded seven women among the 14 candidates in total.

SFI candidate V.G. Divya was elected union chairperson by polling 1163 of the total 2030 votes. M.B. Lakshmi was elected vice-chairperson and Devraj Subrahma-nian general secretary.

The KSU claimed to have won in 11 colleges in Ernakulam district.

“We’ve also won in Arafa college, St George College, Puthenkurushu St Thomas College, YMCA College, Mar Kuriakose college, BPC College and Choondi BMC Law college among others,” said Aloysius Xavier, KSU Ernakulam district president.
