Kochi: In just two days, six persons including four females and a policeman have committed suicide in Ernakulam district, the latest being the assistant sub-inspector of Thadi-yittaparambu station.

The suicide of the three-member family near Puthuvype was the first and the most shocking. Subh-ashan, 52, of Anakkaran Veettil, his wife Geetha, 48 and daughter Nayana, 23 were found hanging inside their house on Monday. The reason was the mental trauma suffered by the family about their daughter’s alleged affair with another person, hailing from Kannur.

The second is the death of a 19-year-old girl, Joisy of Thiruvananthapuram, who was found hanging inside her hostel room near Aluva on Monday morning. The police are yet ascertain the reason behind the death. On Tuesday, a 26-year-old girl Surya from Kollam was found dead in the bathroom of her rented home at Kalamasserry. She was in a live-in relation with a 24-year-old Palakkad native, whom she had met over social media, abandoning her husband and 5-year-old child.

Meanwhile, the reports that policemen face mental pressure and torture from the senior officers have again become a to-pic of debate. According to psychiatrist Dr C.J. John, there is a need for an internal mechanism to tackle the issue.

“Workloads and pressure can drive one to suicide. But we also cannot pinpoint that this could the reason behind every such incident. There can be many factors.”
