Namakkal: 7 killed in two gory road mishaps in western dts

NAMAKKAL: In a terrible tragedy, five persons of a businessman's family including a one-year-old infant were crushed to death on the spot as the car in which they were travelling collided head-on with a truck near Varagur in Namakkal district on Saturday. In another mishap, two persons lost their lives when the two-wheeler they rode dashed against an electric pole near Gobichettipalayam in Erode district in the wee hours today.

The textile businessman, Saravanan, 40, was travelling with his wife, Ms. Vasanthi, 38, their one-year-old kid Bijin, and three other relatives, Rajendran, 64, Kannammal, 58, and Kesavan, 57, when the mishap occurred, police said.

The family members were returning home at Paramathi Velur in the district after offering prayers at the Vishnu temple, Sanjeevaraya Perumal temple in Thalaimalai, on the auspicious occasion of the first Saturday in the Tamil month of ‘Purattasi’.

But sadly, as the car was approaching Manikkavelur, a Thuraiyur-bound truck from Namakkal collided head-on with the car and killed five of its six occupants at the spot itself. The deceased included the businessman, his kid and three of his other relatives.

On information Erumapatti police rushed to the spot and retrieved the badly injured Vasanthi from the mangled remains of the car and rushed her to Namakkal government hospital for treatment.

GOBI: In another tragic mishap near Gobichettipalayam in Erode district, two persons Thangaraj, 34 and Ramesh, 27, returning on a two-wheeler after attending a condolence crashed against a roadside electric pole in the wee hours of Saturday.  While Thangaraj was killed on the spot under the impact of the collision, a critically injured Ramesh died at the Gobi GH. Bangalapudur police are investigating.
