Hyderabad: Counselling must for traffic rule violators
If a person accumulates 12 points, licence will be cancelled.
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad traffic police has made counselling mandatory for violators who logged more than six penalty points. The highest lost point is seven out of 12. Nine offenders have lost seven points and 26 violators have lost six points. Most violations are related to wearing helmets, jumping signals and driving on the wrong side.
If a person accumulates 12 points over a period of two years, his or her driving licence is suspended or cancelled and the punishment also includes imprisonment up to three months, according to the penalty point system implemented from August 1, 2017.
The Hyderabad traffic police has decided to counsel violators before they lose seven points. The violators will have to attend the mandatory one-day counselling at the Traffic Training Institute at Begumpet and Goshamahal.
Nearly 1.32 lakh violators have lost one point while 338 violators lost five points so far. Maximum number of cases was booked in Asif Nagar, Nalla-kunta, Necklace Road, Kachiguda, Punjagutta, Sultan Bazar, Malakpet, Towlichowki, Gosha-mahal, Jubliee Hills, Marredpally, SR Nagar, Narayanaguda, Tiru-malgiri, Banjara Hills and Saifabad.
Dr V. Ravinder, joint commissioner of traffic police, said, “We decided to give counselling to violators who have exceeded six points. During the counselling, violators will be asked to be alert as they are likely to lose their licence once they accumulate 12 points.
He added, “We are focusing on wearing helmet, wrong side driving and signal jumping. We are also conducting special drives against these violations.”
Vinod K. Kanumala, a safety expert from Indian Federation of Road Safety, said, “It is a good move by the traffic police. There should be a proper system to monitor this penalty point system and strict enforcement is required. A proper counselling should be given with good faculty. In Hyderabad, we don’t have professional centres. The government should provide proper infrastructure too.”
