Tirunelveli: The death of a 25-year-old unmarried woman, found hanging dead at her home near here on Wednesday, has been suspected to be a case of honour killing.

The young woman, Sathyabama, daughter of Thalavai of Vellanguzhi village near Veeravanallur in Tirunelveli district was said to be in love with one of her neighbours, Sankar (33), an employee of a cooperative society at Kalakad for more than two years.

The girl’s parents, however, did not accept their love and friendship as the boy belongs to another BC community in the district. In this backdrop, a defenseless Sankar was found dead in the river with multiple cut injuries.

The Veeravanallur police, in connection with the suspected murder of Sankar, picked up Sathyabama and her father for enquiry the same day.

The following morning of the police enquiry, Sathyabama, was found hanging dead at her home. The case though registered as one of ‘mysterious death’ under section 174 of the IPC, has yet raked up the suspicion that the girl might have been murdered by her relatives for loving a boy of other caste in another suspected case of ‘honour killing’.
