Nine peacocks found dead in Ariyalur
Farmers might have sprayed a poisonous substance in their field at vantage points to prevent the peacocks from damaging their crops.
Ariyalur: In a shocking episode for wildlife enthusiasts, as many as nine peacocks including six peahens were found dead under mysterious circumstances in a field owned by farmers Selvaraj and Ranganathan at Kallangkurichi village near Ariyalur on Thursday.
According to Forest department sources, a team of officials led by forest ranger Ganesan rushed to the spot and recovered the poor dead birds and are investigating what possibly led to the death of nine peacocks.
The officials suspect that some of the farmers might have sprayed a poisonous substance in their field at vantage points to prevent the peacocks from damaging their crops. This could have led to the deaths, they said. But farmers refuted their theory.
