Bengaluru: New private transport vehicles will not be registered if they are not equipped with the GPS tracking system and panic button.

After the new rule has kicked in, over a thousand vehicles have been stopped from being registered in the state. A senior officer said that the move was implemented after the notification was issued by the central government.

“We have been asked to stop registering private and commercial vehicles that are used for public transportation if they are not equipped with panic button and tracking system. Any vehicle which will be used to drop and pick up people should have both the systems, failing which the vehicle will not be registered and will be put on hold until the norms are followed,” he said.

The officer also said that they will soon carry out a drive and start penalising the commercial vehicles that are not equipped with both these systems. “We will decide on a time limit, before which all vehicles should install both systems. Senior officers will discuss the matter with the state government and then inform us about the next step. But we will want all commercial vehicles to install the systems, keeping in mind the safety of public,” said the officer.

“The public safety cannot be compromised and we will ensure that by the end of 2019 every commercial vehicle is equipped with tracking system and panic button,” he said.
