Vijayawada: Tension prevailed at the office of the Commissioner of Police in the city for sometime on Monday after a woman attempted suicide alleging harassment by the police of Ibrahimpatnam over ‘sextortion’ case.

The woman, B. Savitri, wife of an employee at the VTPS boiler section,  reached the office and alleged that her husband,  who borrowed money from two persons, was  being harassed by moneylenders.

She consumed a substance emitting pungent odour like kerosene, used to prevent breeding of mosquitoes, and collapsed at the office. She was rushed to GGH.

After gaining senses, she said though she had lodged a complaint with the Ibrahimpatnam police regarding the harassment by the moneylenders but that the CI and SI pestered her family members.

Savitri’s husband borrowed Rs 1.50 lakh and Rs 1.70 lakh from two persons a year ago but could not repay. The matter was taken to the court which ordered that the money should be cut from his salary to repay the moneylenders.

The woman lodged a complaint with the police but they did not interfere into the matter as it was before the court. A case of suicide attempt has been registered against Savitri by the SR Pet police. There are allegations that the couple is trying to avoid repayment of the money they borrowed.
